Try These Easy Summer Hair Accessories

This time of year we start to look for shortcuts to fabulous hair. It's no fun to spend an hour blowing your hair dry and using hot tools when it's equally as hot outside. Lauren Le Vine of Daily Makeover found six great summer hair styles starting with Dakota Fanning and her bejeweled headband. Check out her other picks too.

Fresh Eat Pray Love Perfume and Candles

Movie merchandising isn't just for Happy Meals anymore and the soon-to-be released Eat Pray Love is the latest movie influencing the retail market. Eat Pray Love chronicles Liz Gilbert's seach for pleasure, spirituality and balance across Italy, India and Indonesia. We resisted reading it for years (because if there's that much hype, it's value is suspicious!); but in the end we enjoyed her vivid descriptions of her travels. Eat Pray Love shared its name and inspiration with The Republic of Tea and World Market among others; but the products we're most interested in are the fragrances by Fresh.

The scent "Eat" is based on author Liz Gilbert's four month food tour through Italy which is our favorite part of the book. Her descriptions of food are drool-worthy. It's no wonder Fresh chose lemon, basil and creamy vanilla scents to represent the beginning of her journey. "Pray" was based on Gilbert's study at an Ashram in India and has notes of jasmine, pink pepper, patchouli, and incense. The final scent, "Love", represents Gilbert's final few months of travel through the tropical paradise in Bali with notes of jasmine, sandalwood and amber.

The Fresh collection is also available as candles and would make an excellent present for an Eat Pray Love fan. You can find the products at http://www.fresh.com/. The movie opens August 13th, 2010.

Cutler Does Africa

thuy sea to the stars charity scarf

Celeb hairstylist Rodney Cutler is headed to Africa this fall to run over 250 miles from the Port of Mombasa and up Mount Kilimanjaro in a Sea to the Stars run. Why would anyone do such a thing? Cutler is partnering with Toby Tanser, world-renowned runner and founder of Shoe4Africa to raise money to build the first-ever public children’s hospital in Kenya.

To raise money for the hospital and Shoe4Africa, Thuy designed an African themed, custom-designed headscarves (shown). 100% of all proceeds from the sale of the $45 scarf go toward building the Kenyan hospital. Buy a Thuy Sea to the Stars scarf today.

How to Dress for a Long Flight

Jennifer Aniston at the airport

Thanks to AOL Stylist for sharing tips on How to Dress for a Long Flight. While we agree with most of their tips, we think it's OK to wear nice jeans (meaning no holes or trendy shreds) on a flight. Many jeans like our Earnest Sewn and J. Brands are so comfy and classy now, that rule feels outdated.

A few additional suggestions for looking good and staying comfortable on a long haul:
  1. Always wear a long scarf or pashmina. It can double as a blanket or a pillow, because who wants to use the airlines?
  2. If it's an overnight flight, pack a pair of leggings, long-sleeved T-shirt and socks and change for sleepy time. That is, unless your flying in First. Many airlines provide sleeping outfits for you.
  3. Pack a carry on full of moisturizing beauty products, fun reads and load your iPod with soothing tunes.

Shipping Luggage: Is It Worth It?

luggage

We've never shipped our luggage to our destination and this report from Smarter Travel makes us think we won't be doing so anytime soon. It doesn't sound very cost effective or easy. But certainly if you had a special occasion it would be worth it to make sure your dress got there on time.

Have you ever shipped your luggage?

Laser Hair Removal Giveaway!

So far in 2010, I've tried waxing, shaving, and depilatory creams in an effort to find the best solution for lasting hair removal with minimal effort, cost and side-effects like bumps, in-grown hair or rashes. I finally turned to laser hair removal because I wasn't satisfied with my other results. I'm excited to giveaway packages to three of you at the Advanced Derma Laser Tech in NYC worth $450 to $600!

I spoke to Jennifer Kandemir, owner and founder of Advanced Derma Laser Tech, about laser hair removal and its benefits.

Jennifer began her career as a hair colorist in prestigious salons such as John Frieda and Warren Tricomi. After an unfortunate and scarring experience with laser hair removal, Jennifer set out to find a safe and effective laser for women of color. Some lasers are unsafe, as Jennifer found out personally,  because the laser is attracted to darker pigment. This is also why it is not safe to get laser treatments when you have a tan. Jennifer found two lasers that she uses in her office: the Cutera Nd: YAG laser for women with darker complexions and the Alexandrite by Candela Gentle Laser for lighter complexions.

Here are the most important reasons men and women choose laser hair removal: whether you have unwanted leg, arm, bikini, or facial hair, it is a life-long issue and affects self-esteem. The investment in laser hair removal is less than the cost of a lifetime of waxing and shaving. Laser results in permanent removal of unwanted hair. Hair is usually gone after six treatments, though in some cases patients may need maintenance treatments for stubborn areas. Laser hair removal can finally get rid of ingrown hairs or bumps caused by plucking, waxing and shaving.

We're excited to offer three JSG readers laser hair removal at Advanced Derma Laser Tech in New York City.  Pick your choice of six sessions of leg, bikini or underarm areas.  The packages are worth $450-$600 each! Women and men are welcome to enter. Here's what to do: leave a comment below then send your name, phone, and email to jsggiveaway@gmail.com.  We'll select three winners on Friday, July 30th, 2010.

Burberry Beauty

Burberry Beauty launched this summer and we're itching to get our hands on some lipgloss for our beachbags.  Here are a few tips we learned from Nordstrom's National Beauty Director Cheri Botiz (twitter: @NordstromBeauty) at the launch in San Francisco:

Use Pale Rose eye shadow on the inner corner of the eye to look like you just had 8 hours of sleep.

For a perfect smokey eye use Trench eye shadow as a base color and Taupe Brown as the crease color.

Union Red lipstick is one of the most wearable reds on the market.

On Our Radar: Teetotum Hotel in Tulum

One of our fave hairstylists just got back from a trip to the Teetotum Hotel in Tulum Mexico and raved about the tiny four room inn. What did she like about it? Top on the list was the friendly staff who went out of their way to make sure she had everything she and her friends needed. She also said that the rooms were large and comfortably decorated --beach-y yet modern with iPod docks and Wi-Fi. While the hotel isn't right on the beach, it offers free bicycles for the short ride.

She raved about the food too, saying it was ridiculously good for the price. Beers and mango margaritas were about $1 and $3 respectively!

We've long been fans of the Riviera Maya for its convenience to the east coast--a non stop flight to Cancun, then a short cab ride and you're in heaven!

Rates at the Teetotum Hotel start at $85 a night.

Bacardi Torched Cherry Getaway

We first became fans of  Bacardi's Torched Cherry during the Hotel Thrillist weekend at the Fontainebleau. After tasting the Bacardi Torched Cherry Getaway a the Robert Verdi Twitter Getaways event tonight we're officially o-b-s-e-s-s-e-d! Drink enough of them and you'll have a vacation in a glass! Here's how to make them at home:

Bacardi Torched Cherry Getaway
2 parts Bacardi Torched Cherry
3 Blackberries
2 Lemon slices
Bunch of mint (6 leaves)
1/2 part simple syrup
Muddle blackberries, lemon slices and mint.  Add the rum and simply syrup, then shake, double strain and pour over ice. Garnish with mint, blueberries or raspberries.

The Ford Fiesta

We recently had the chance to chat with Lesli Ann Mie Agcaoili, color and materials designer at Ford Motors who explained that the new Ford Fiesta was practically designed for JSG's. "It's really unlike any other car on the market--it's really meant to be a fun car." With colors like Lime Squeeze (shown), Bright Magenta and Blue Flame, Lesli and Ford are definitely on the right track.

Lesli says that she looks to pop culture and fashion when dreaming up the candy colors for the interior and exterior of the car. "Lime Squeeze reminds me of the Diet Mountain Dew I often drink." As for her other inspirations, Leslie named swimwear, California culture, graffiti art and even nail polish. "I check out Sephora to see what new colors they introduce."

In addition to an attention-getting outside, the Ford Fiesta offers seven interior trim options--25% of the fabric inserts are made of recycled material--and flattering ambient lighting, a la Virgin America.

But it's more than just bright colors and aesthetics that caught our eye on the Ford Fiesta: It also has unexpected options for a car of its class, including heated seats, a push-start button, heated side view mirrors, plus it gets up to 40 MPG on the highway.

The 2011 models are available at Ford dealers nationwide.

Going Topless?

cantaloupes

Would you take your top off at the beach or pool? In a worldwide poll of 3,000 people conducted by Skycanner, a whopping 96% of men thought it was fine for females to go topless on beaches and only 87% of women agreed. When asked about where it's OK to wear a bikini, 93% of men and women believed it was ok on the beach but only 31% thought it was appropriate in a bar, cafe or restaurant. For men going shirtless, 98% said it was fine on the beach but only 18% said it was acceptable in a supermarket or bar.

The poll also put to rest the idea that Americans are more prudish than  Europeans: More Americans were in favor of women going topless than Italians, French and Scandinavians.  Those dirty Germans beat us out, however.  99% agreeing women should be allowed to go topless.

BeautyZZZ Natural Silk Pillowcase

BeautyZZZ Natural Silk Pillowcase

We've given you many tips on making a blowout last; but one thing we didn't recommend was using a silk pillowcase. The BeautyZZZ Natural Silk Pillowcase promises to defend against bed head.  The soft surface allows your hair to slide over the pillowcase during the night and not get snagged and tangled.

It also protects your face's natural contours. Isn't it is terrible to wake up after a long night's sleep and see a new wrinkle in the mirror because you were sleeping on your side?

This would be perfect for travel for your hair and skin; but also it packs small and repels dust mites which are in even the fanciest hotels. You could also use it as a dirty laundry bag on your way home. The BeautyZZZ pillowcase is at Beauty.com.

Kimpton Hotels Sunday Sleep In Program

I've stayed at all seven Kimpton Hotels in the D.C. area and many more across the country.  Usually my stays are over the weekend as a landing spot after a fun night out.I always call down for a late check out; but now Kimpton is making that part easier.  They're offering the Sunday Sleep In Program for Saturday night stays where check out isn't until 2:00 p.m. Now we can add a good night's sleep to the other qualities we value at Kimpton: style, friendly service, good value, and evening wine hour.  Details at KimptonHotels.com.

MAC's Haute & Naughty Lash Mascara

Mac Haute and Naughty Mascara

Finally, we can stop packing two kinds of mascaras in our carry on bags. MAC's Haute and Naughty Lash Mascara offers two wiper systems, or "orifices" as the cheeky folks at MAC like to call them. The smaller Haute side (the solid pink top) is just right for daytime and creates separated, natural lashes, while the larger Naughty side (the sparkly pink top) imparts more volume and drama. The Haute side is also good for getting lower lashes and those pesky inner corner ones.

But just because we're now only packing one mascara, don't think for a minute that we're leaving our fake eyelashes at home. Read on for tips on getting extreme eyelashes.

Available at Maccosmetics.com and Nordstrom.com.

We're going to pack the Caudalie Cleansing Water to Go on our next girls trip.  You can find it at Sephora for $14.00.

Fairmont is Expanding Its Bicycle Program

bmw cruiser bicycle

Good news: Fairmont Hotels are now offering free use of BMW Cruise bicycles in their hotels in the U.S., in addition to Canada. Locks and helmets are also available. We suggest touring wine country from the Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, seeing Chicago from the back of a bicycle as Hope recently did or cycling around Washington D.C.'s historic C and O Canal.

Celebrate National Daiquiri Day

daiquiri

Though daiquiris have gotten a bad wrap as being the drink of choice of younger drinkers or the Applebee's crowd -- and admittedly, a banana daiquiri is our breakfast of choice when in the tropics -- the original daiquiri was not frozen or overly sweet. In fact, it was masculine enough to be a favorite of red meat eating, fishing fanatic Ernest Hemingway. Celebrate National Daiquiri Day today with an original-style daiquiri:

3 parts Bacardi Superior Rum
1 part lime or lemon juice
1/2 part sugar
In a shaker with ice, combine ingredients.

On Our Radar: Wilmington, N.C.

We took a quick trip through North Carolina this week on a whim to visit a friend recently transplanted to Fort Bragg.  We chose Wilmington literally because it was the closest beachtown to the base.  We were so thrilled with our trip, we're looking for ways to squeeze another visit before the end of the summer.  You may know Wilmington from One Tree Hill,  Dawson's Creek or any number of other movies and shows that are filmed there.  We loved that it's a vibrant city (not your regular run down, salty beach town) with a university, culture, shopping, restaurants, and mostly because it's only a stone's throw from the soft, white sand beaches.

We haven't made it to Cabo or Costa Rica yet for an all women's surf camp; but Wrightsville Beach has its own school and it's much more accessible for East Coast girls.  The surf and yoga retreat is a six day program that includes lodging, daily yoga and surf lessons, breakfast, lunches and more.

Bluewater Grill
We had a great dinner at Bluewater Grill.  If you go ask for a seat outside with views of the yacht club and order the crab dip to start. It also has a great bar on the patio if you're looking for night spot.

Monkee's of Wilmington
There's tons of upscale shopping in Wilmington.  We had a weak moment at Monkee's of Wilmington, where they had a huge selection of Pour la Victoire, Tory Burch, and DVF sandals and booties.

If we go back, we'd likely rent an oceanside cottage and bring a group of friends. We'd love to hear your recommendations and favorite spots in Wilmington!

Retro St. Christopher Medals

St. Christopher Medal in Pink

You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate these retro St. Christopher medals from Get Back Designs that surfers wore in the 60's and 70's. Since St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers we think they'd look hip on our next adventure whether it's to Costa Rica or South Beach.  We're partial to the silver and pink version above which is only $14; but there are endless combinations available. Safe travels!

Bic Comfort 3 Pivot Razors

I've tried plenty of razors but was pleasantly surprised at the great results I got with the Bic Comfort 3 Pivot razor. While the new razors with four blades claim to do the best job; I think they're too wide to navigate around bony ankles and the soft skin around the bikini area. The Bic is just the right width, has a soft grip feel, and aloe and Vitamin E for comfort. The only thing that confuses me is the berry scent they added. While it is somewhat pleasing, in a Strawberry Shortcake Doll kinda way, it doesn't have any function. Unless, that is, you're part of the teen crowd.  When I asked a young friend about it, she said she purposely bought her razors because of their coconut scent. Go figure.

I found the Bic Comfort 3 razors at CVS in a 4+2 bonus pack for $5.

Crate and Barrel's T-Tech by Tumi Luggage

crate and barrel Tumi luggage

Everyone's favorite home store, Crate and Barrel, is now carrying an exclusive line of T-Tech by Tumi luggage. The pieces are sleek and black with red trim. They have an expandable zipper so you can make your luggage roomier should you happen to buy too much when you're on vacation--not that that has ever happened to us! The one down side is that the bags don't have 360 degree wheels and we've vowed never to buy a bag again without them. If you feel the same way, you may want to limit your purchase to one of the Tumi zip top tote bags. They'll make great carry ons and are a steal at $39.95.

Review: Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish

Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish
When we first saw Chanel Paradoxal nail polish, a dark gray-violet that is part of the Chanel Fall 2010 Beauty Collection, we couldn't wait to get our hot little hands on it.  It looked to be a rival to our number one favorite polish ever, Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Opulent Cloud. What we love about Opulent Cloud -- and what we hoped for Chanel's Pardoxal -- is that it practically changes color from silver to gold to lavender, like a rich piece of silk.

When we first saw the bottle of Paradoxal in real life, we were a bit disappointed as it's much lighter in color than the press photo. Even considering the strength of our flash in the photo above right, it's significantly lighter in person and a bit less sparkly. Still, we know that you can never judge a polish by the color in the bottle, so we hightailed it to our local nail salon. On our fingers, it's a pretty purple-y gray and, like expensive blonde highlights, the subtle sparkle is most notable in the sunshine.

The verdict: It's a nice addition to our fall collection of polishes, but you don't have to camp out at Neimans or the other stores that will be selling it overnight to get it.

Hotel Club: A Burgeoning Trend

New York Magazine addressed the trend of NYC hotels that have seen-and-be-seen clubs, a la The Standard, the Gansevoort and more. We've long been a fan of these types one-stop hotels for girls' trips. Yes, it can seem unadventurous to eat, party and sleep all in the same building, but it makes life so much easier when you're with a group, though you certainly have to be in the right hotel.

On our last trip to Miami, we stayed at the W South Beach. We hit Wall at the hotel two of the nights we were there. Not only was it the place to be back in March, it also made it easy when two of us wanted to go to bed earlier than the other two. There was no expensive cab ride, no worrying if our friends were going to be able to find their way home. It was the perfect mix of safe fun.

A Peek Inside Shoshanna's Carry On

shoshanna
We recently had the opportunity to talk with one of our fave designers, Shoshanna Gruss about what she takes in her carry on when she travels. Her hubby is an avid fisherman so Shoshanna's favorite vacation destinations are anywhere he can fish, including Deep Water Cay in the Bahamas and Cape Cod. Here's what she carries on the road.

My carry on is either a large L.L. Bean Boat and Tote bag

or Chanel Cocoon. Both are big and roomy, aren't too fancy and are light to carry.
Chanel Cocoon Bag

I almost always wear black leggings, a black tank and an American Apparel oversized sweater when I travel. I love their sexy basics.

I use EOS Lip Balm. It's egg-shaped so it's easy to find in my bag. I use Lancome Hypnose mascara.

When I'm going to the beach, I make sure I have my Venus Bikini razor so I'm swimsuit ready.

I get every magazine and I read every magazine. Details and Vanity Fair have fun and interesting articles. When I'm done, I leave them on the plane for others.

When it comes to tunes, I'm kind of a nerd. I like James Taylor, Billy Joel, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z and Christopher Cross.
